Operator's Handbook, Rolls-Royce Merlin Mk. Nos. 22, 24 and T24
![]() |
The Rolls-Royce Merlin Mark 20 Series is a liquid-cooled Vee engine displacing 1,649 in³ and producing nearly 1,650 horsepower. It has two separate blocks of six cylinders with overhead valves, rockers and camshafts. The connecting rods are six pairs, plain and forked, working on a one-piece, balanced, six-throw crankshaft. The forward end of the crankshaft drives the spur reduction gear for the propeller. Gears at the rear of the crankshaft drive the wheelcase auxiliaries, including a two-speed centrifugal supercharger. This has a central entry, coupled to an updraught, twin-choke, fully automatic carburettor. The required throttle opening for a given power is adjusted, independently, by an automatic boost control unit to suit varying intake pressures. Multi-ejector exhaust manifolds, secured to each cylinder block, discharge through openings in the cowling side panels. |
